In April of 2007, Vision Forum and our president Doug Phillips were subjected to a smear campaign designed to harm our reputation, ministry, and business. The smear campaign was launched by an excommunicated couple who disseminated demonstrable falsehoods and grievous accusations to the state home school leaders of America. The April letter was the latest effort in a two-year attack on men, women, children, ministries, and ministers by Mark and Jennifer Epstein of San Antonio, Texas. We believe the evidence demonstrates that the Epsteins have engaged in Internet frauds and extortion attempts. The Epsteins have repeatedly sought to disrupt the lives of families and destroy the reputation of ministries, and harm the business of Vision Forum. Strong evidence suggests that Mrs. Epstein, in cooperation with other like miscreants, has served as a key ringleader and architect behind an Internet conspiracy run by anonymous e-terrorists operating under the cover of an organization known as Ministry Watchman.
The purpose of this page is to provide a preliminary response for those who may have received the Epsteins most recent round of falsehoods. Toward this end, we have assembled six key documents that refute several critical misrepresentations that they have espoused.
Previously, the Epsteins and their Ministry Watchman co-conspirators attempted to deceive the public by sending multiple letters to Vision Forum customers which we believe to be defamatory. In our view, they intentionally deceived the public by creating the impression that the e-mails were sent from Vision Forum.
In early 2005, the Epsteins were excommunicated by their local congregation for habitual lying, revilings, division of the brethren, and cruelty. The discipline of the local church occurred only after years of patient intervention and loving care (for more on this, read the formal Boerne Christian Assembly statement). The discipline of BCA has been affirmed by the leaders of other San Antonio-vicinity congregations where the church leaders have labored to shepherd this couple to repentance in Christ, only to have the Epsteins respond to them with the same sort of lies, subterfuge, and attempts to divide the body of Christ which compelled BCA to excommunicate this wayward couple more than two years ago. (For more on this, read Faith PCAs response to the Epsteins.)
It appears obvious that this recent attack by the Epsteins was an effort to play on the fears of innocent individuals and to actively create division in the home school community by seeking to falsely pit longtime friends at Mantle Ministries and Vision Forum against each other (see Vision Forum statement). In response to the Epsteins hate-piece, longtime leaders of the San Antonio home school community have provided a different perspective. A state Supreme Court justice has also offered comments regarding the firing of an employee who assisted Jennifer Epstein in vile schemes.
