Hula Bowl Players Exhorted to Serve Jesus Christ and Become Faithful Christian Fathers

Those of you who are familiar with the ministry of Vision Forum may be aware of my serious concerns over a variety of issues connected with professional athletics and its impact on the Christian family. (See Scott Brown’s thoughtful blog, to which I offer a ringing endorsement.) Over the years, these concerns have grown, not abated. In one of the more unusual providences of God, I was recently given an opportunity to put my “money where my mouth is” by bringing the Word of God to men, many of whom will soon make the transition from collegiate to professional football. Through a remarkable work in the life and heart of the visionary owners and the sponsors of the Hula Bowl, God opened the door for me to preach an uncompromising Gospel message to this year’s players the morning before their big game. It was one of the more unusual and blessed opportunities I have had in nearly twenty years of Gospel preaching.

The nub of my message to the men was this: Ultimately, fame and football are irrelevant; Christ is everything; you are only strong and successful because the God of Holy Scriptures made you so. He providentially decrees all things including the destinies of men. He can take away your strength and everything else at any moment. Acknowledge Jesus Christ or perish. The Bible is God’s revelation source. It tells us that your life and your manhood will be measured, not by football, but by whether or not you served Christ, were men of character, and were faithful husbands and fathers who embraced a multi-generational vision of faithfulness by keeping covenant with God and raising your children to serve Him.
