Queen Juana de Castile

A daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella of Castile and Aragon, Juana was taken a young girl to watch the burning of Christians at the stake for Protestantism. This, one of her earliest memories, seems to have made an intense impression on the young girl, who later embraced the evangelical faith for which those “heretics” died. After her mother’s death, agreements between her father, husband, and son would keep her confined as insane and only nominally queen of her rightful kingdom of Castile.
