Tonight I will be in Virgina with my father and mother to celebrate the 35th anniversary of my father’s organization The Conservative Caucus. Since 1974, my father has sought to defend our constitutional freedoms by heading the only conservative grass roots lobbying organization with contacts in all 435 congressional districts.
I remember as a young man traveling with my father, as he was starting the Conservative Caucus, to all of the 435 congressional districts. Over these last 35 years my father has been in the vanguard on the most important issues of the day. Whether it was in support of global ballistic missile defense, which came to be known as SDI, or fighting for the repeal of the Clark Amendment (which blocked U.S. aid to anti-Soviet freedom fighters in Angola), or opposing the Jimmy Carter-supported SALT treaties, or testifying before the United States Senate to oppose the nomination of Justice David Souter to the Supreme Court because he understood that Souter was a pro-abortion justice, or even leading the charge in having charges of impeachment brought against former president Bill Clinton, Dad has been the leading voice when others have not known what to do.
Joining my dad to celebrate his accomplishments will be Congressman Ron Paul giving the keynote address, and there will be speeches by Richard Viguerie (chairman of American Target Advertising), Major Andy Messing, Dr. David Noble of Summit Ministries, yours truly, and a special musical performance by Charlie Zahm and fiddler Tad Marks. I hope you can join me if you are in the area tonight for a special opportunity to honor my father.

Introducing the 2010 Vision Forum Family Catalog
Huzzah! The new 2010 Vision Forum Family Catalog, this year titled “Provision & Protection,” is now on its way to hundreds of thousands of families all across the country.
The goal for our catalog each year is to provide parents with key resources they need to defend the Faith and advance Christ’s kingdom. That is why we include tools that affirm the authority of Scripture and the Great Commission mandate to teach “all things whatsoever I have commanded.” It is also why we are unapologetic in defense of the blessing of children, the nobility of womanhood, the necessity of manly leadership, and the need to build a culture of virtuous boyhood and girlhood.
This year’s specific catalog theme is God’s provision and protection. As we face economic uncertainty and political confusion all around us, we must fully acknowledge that “God provides” — that it is He, not we, who shall “supply all [our] need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). Toward this end, you will find books, CDs, films, and other products in our 2010 catalog that will encourage your family to trust in the Ultimate Provider for your needs, as well as resources that demonstrate creative ways to be good stewards of God’s provision in matters of home, business, education, and much more.
No matter what happens, this truth is sure: We serve the Victor, and we can be confident that He will provide us with the means to protect our homes, families, and nation against the Serpent’s minions who seek to subvert His kingdom purpose, for “Through God we shall do valiantly: for He it is that shall tread down our enemies” (Psalm 60:12).
God provides and protects!

The image above is of Peter Bradrick, myself, and Joshua on the black lava rocks of the Island of Fernandina in the Galapagos Archipelago. In the background, you can faintly see Isabela, which is the biggest volcanic island of the Galapagos. I have placed an extra-large image for those of you who might like to use this shot as a screensaver.
Shortly after we left the Galapagos, Fernandina erupted again and the island flowed with lava killing animals, wiping out vegetation, and reshaping the topography of part of the island. We were all disappointed that we were not there to film such an exciting event, especially my daughter Liberty, who reminded us that one of the past episodes of Jonathan Park includes a scene on the island of Fernandina in which the volcano blows.

Last week I had the great opportunity to show a pre-release version of our new film The Mysterious Islands to several members of Answers in Genesis. Today, my good friend Ken Ham posted this piece on his blog about the film:
We have just seen the pre-release version of an amazing new feature-length documentary called The Mysterious Islands. While there are several secular and Christian films about Charles Darwin and the Galapagos Islands being released this year, this one really does an excellent job of showing not only the beauty and uniqueness of the remote Galapagos Islands—what many have called both the birthplace of Darwinism and “Darwin’s Eden,” but also presents great teaching in regard to the creation/evolution/Genesis issues. At AiG, we are always on the lookout for the best resources to provide for people—but it is important that the resource be of the highest quality and present a very clear message. This creationist/Darwin movie does just that! My friend Doug Phillips of Vision Forum is the executive producer of the DVD. He has said something very insightful that Christians really need to understand about this place. It is that “Christians look to Jerusalem; Muslims look to Mecca; but evolutionists look to the Galapagos as the spiritual center of their scientific faith.” Just look at the secular documentaries that are being promoted across the “science” cable channels this month and next. I think you’ll agree that Doug’s observation is very true. The Galapagos are home to salt-spitting marine iguanas, flightless cormorants, and giant tortoises that can live to be more than 150 years of age. Look at the photos that I’ve included here. It’s a mysterious and beautiful place. But they’re much more than that, too. They are a place of great questions, but even greater answers! This film has been produced in a way that is spellbinding. Our own Dr. Tommy Mitchell, who saw the film during final edit last week, sent us this commendation after he and co-worker Roger Patterson (author of our Evolution Exposed books and one of our primary curriculum writers) finished their viewing. Tommy said: As I viewed this video I was amazed at the beauty of the Galapagos. . . . This production contains spectacular cinematography. It is both awe inspiring and educational. But most importantly, the viewer will truly understand the flaws in Darwin’s ideas, while at the same time realizing the truth of the Genesis account. . . . The incredible majesty of the Creator God is obvious!

There is such a great need to get truthful information about Darwin and the Galapagos Islands out, especially right now, since this is such a big month for the evolutionists. (November is the 150th anniversary of the publication of his book On the Origin of the Species.) Evolutionists and the huge media empires that embrace that worldview are spreading lies that must be countered. This exceptional new documentary does that. I think you’ll really enjoy the way that it’s set up to let you “see” through the eyes of 16-year-old Joshua Phillips, who joins his father Doug Phillips and noted researchers such as Dr. John Morris of the Institute for Creation Research. The Mysterious Islands is produced in such a way that it is the story of one boy’s search for answers to the great controversy of the modern world. And unlike other films, it’s an adventure that gives the critical answers that are so needed right now! There would be no point producing a beautiful and professionally done movie about the Galapagos—if it didn’t have real solid answers we need to defend the Christian faith.

Beall en route to Florida for Mysterious Islands promotional.
“Six million Jews died in concentration camps, but six billion broiler chickens will die this year in slaughterhouses.” Ingrid Newkirk, President of PETA
Christianity teaches that man is made in the image of God, that he is the pinnacle of creation, and the unique object of God’s special redemptive love. On the other hand, a basic tenet of the evolutionary faith is that man is a mere animal. Some evolutionists even view man as a virus on this planet, a dangerous life-form that threatens to unfairly disturb the peace of the animal kingdom and the natural progress of evolution. This group is typified by organizations like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) which is known for tactics ranging from terrorism, to demonstrations of public nudity, to irresponsible and extremist statements like the one quoted above.
Now The Mysterious Islands film takes this issue head-on with a special bonus feature on the Galapagos and the whaling trade. Our position is essentially this: Hunting animals can be a proper, God-glorifying, and expressly biblical activity, when it is done as an act of dominion, provision, and stewardship. This can be true for buffalo, deer, and duck, and it can also be true for whales. While it is true that whaling can be an unnecessary practice, and bad stewardship over a precious resource given by God to man, it is not necessarily so. And the same could be said for every type of hunting. Whaling has been a vital industry to indigenous populations around the world, and it played a crucial role in the development of America. The notion that it is criminal and cruel to harvest animals because they are big, fluffy, or beautiful is a new-Darwinian philosophy borne out of self-loathing for humanity, and the premise that man is a mere animal with no more rights than any other animal on the planet.
This issue is at its root a theological one. Christians need to understand that the most vocal elements of the animal rights community are taking aim at a target, and that target is the Creator who made man to have dominion over the animals. It is not accidental that many of the most vocal advocates for animal rights are also defenders of the right of women and physicians to kill humans within the womb. Save the whales, kill the babies—it makes perfect sense in a Darwinian world. But it is this type of perverse perspective that inspires the leaders of this movement to compare the genocide of Jews by Hitler to the “sin” of eating at Kentucky Fried Chicken.

“For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine.” (Psalm 50:10-11)
Six hundred miles off the coast of South America and positioned in the southern part of the Galapagos archipelago is Rabida Island. About a mile in diameter, Rabida is a world of red sand beaches, flamingos, sea lions, and white tipped sharks. Strategically positioned among the islands that Charles Darwin made famous because of his visit in 1838, Rabida is a celebrated stop for the small handfuls of atheists and evolutionists enthusiasts who make the pilgrimage to this Jerusalem of scientism.
We came to Rabida for different reasons. The Mysterious Islands expedition made one of our early stops to this strange volcanic island. Our goal was to dive with sharks, examine the giant cactus plants with soft prickers found only on these islands, to interact with seals, and shoot an important sequence of our film between myself and Dr. John Morris on the red sand beaches.
The first inhabitants we met were the most surprising. Their strange art works turned the beaches into a vast canvas—a creepy, impressionistic canvas, but an interesting one, nonetheless.
We had entered the world of the Ghost Crab.
The most distinctive feature of this ultra-fast little crustacean are his eyes which are at the end of a long retractable stalk. These eyes can be raised vertically or lowered into grooves of their carapace. Remarkably, the unique construction of their eyes allows them to see 360 degrees. Their eyesight is so sharp that they can see flying insects, which enables them to catch them in mid air. They can not see directly up, however, which is why they need to burrow to protect them from predators.
The best time to see Ghost Crabs is at night time in the moonlight when they emerge to forage. But I had the privilege of seeing close to five hundred of them during my visit to Jarvis Island where the smooth beaches are full of a beautiful reddish volcanic sand. Dr. John and I were walking down the beach shooting a segment on the life of Darwin at the time. I could see hundreds of these bizarre Ghost Crabs with my naked eye and also through my binoculars. They seemed to emerge from their lairs in the scores and, like an army of creepy knife wielding soldiers, would move back and forth across the beach, only to disappear seconds later into underground tunnels. There were so many that from a distance it looked like the beach itself was moving. And not only do they move—but they move very fast, and can make sharp directional changes—at about ten miles per hour.
Even in our fallen world you see the unending, magnificent mercy of God in Creation. I believe the ecosystem of the Galapagos is an example of God’s mercy. He has allowed the island to develop an equilibrium where every creature plays a particular role designed to bring greater harmony and balance to the islands.
The Ghost Crabs are a great example of the mercy of God through ecosystem equilibrium: for example, Ghost Crabs are part of God’s program to keep the beaches of the Galapagos very clean. Dead animals and debris do not remain long on the Galapagos. God has designed some creature to dispose of the waste. Ghost Crabs do exactly this. But they are more then the trash collectors, they are predators. Essentially, they are bullies with shells. If they can subdue it, they will eat it—including hatching sea turtles.
Imagine seeing a group of crabs jump on a newborn baby turtle and consuming it within five minutes—in one sense it is a terrible sight, but in another sense, it is a reminder that man’s sin has brought death to the world. And yet, God uses death in the animal kingdom as part of his provision and protection of the world during the present age.
The most amazing thing about the Ghost Crab is the mysterious patterns it leaves on the beaches through “sand balls.” The sand balls are blobs of sand which the Ghost Crab has seized, compressed, and sorted for micro-organisms. By squeezing all the life out of the sand and then eating it all, the Ghost Crab leaves a perfectly formed ball. When you walk down the beach you may see thousands of these balls in amazing patterns. And every pattern is unique.
A few other helpful facts about the incredible way that God designed these creatures: The Ghost Crab tunnels down four feet into the ground at a 45° angle, creating 1-2 inch wide holes, which speckle the beach. At dusk, these crabs will sprint to the ocean in order to obtain oxygen from the water which washes over their gills, and in June, females will release their eggs into the ocean. Ghost Crabs hibernate during the winter, holding their breath for six months by storing oxygen in sacs near the gills. They can also have a natural filter system which gathers oxygen from the air, enough to survive for one year without entering into water.

The Match of the Millennium: Darwin v. Calvin Sample from Vision Forum on Vimeo.
Our new film, The Mysterious Islands, takes you to ground zero in the battle between biblical Christianity and evolutionism—the Galapagos Archipelago, the holy land for atheists, evolutionists and followers of Charles Darwin. In order to preserve this Jerusalem of Atheism, humans are now being expelled to make way to four-footed creatures, finches, reptiles and other animals which were the subject of Charles Darwin’s interest during his five week stay on these islands.
Today on the front page of the NY Times (third most read newspaper in the nation) a report appears revealing that “more than 1,000 poor Ecuadoreans” have been expelled from the isles of the blue-footed booby and giant tortoise in order to protect this animal preservation.
“All we want, like people anywhere on this planet, is a dignified existence,” said Yonny Mantuano, 36, who bought a lot to build a home at El Mirador. Another Ecuadorian resident of the Galapagos commented: “If it is God’s will, I’m on this island to stay.”

About two decades ago, the Phillips family had the honor of scooting around Lynchburg, Virginia, in the big suburban of Dr. Jerry Falwell. The late and great Dr. Falwell was a big man and his vision was even bigger. As we drove with Dr. Falwell he pointed out location after location which were destined to be part of the campus he was building. Last week, I was invited to address the Liberty University School of Law faculty and student body on Christianity and the common law. This was my first return to the land of Dr. Falwell’s vision and I was amazed to see how much of what he had purposed before the Lord had actually come to pass.
I was invited by Matt Staver, Dean of the Liberty Law School, to bring the two-hour presentation. Later that night I delivered an address on law and the biblical family in America to the Liberty University Law School chapter of the Federalist Society. Both Dean Staver and my good friend, the accomplished legal theorist and defender of God’s Law Academic Dean Jeff Tuomala joined me for the evening’s discussion. Also joining me for the trek to Liberty Law School was my wife Beall, daughter Liberty and Bob Renaud.
(Students of Vision Forum Ministries Witherspoon School of Law and Public Policy may remember that Dean Tuomala was one of our featured speakers several years ago).
My lecture on Christianity and the Common Law addressed the biblical foundations of our legal system and traced more than 6,000 years of law, beginning in the Garden of Eden. I addressed and affirmed the thesis of Dr. Francis Nigel Lee that the true origins of the Common Law are found in the Garden and that each of the Ten Commandments are implicit to the account of God’s interaction with Adam and Eve. I made the case that the entire bible is the law-word of God, that all law must be interpreted in the light of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, that, the ceremonies and shadows within ancient law which pointed to Christ have been completed, and that the civil law reveals the perfect and unchanging character of our Lord, even as the general equity of the law remains the one true foundation for justice and western civilization’s tradition of Common Law. Having laid the biblical foundation of law. I traced the history of Western law from Moses to the Code of Justinian, to the Augustinian mission, to King Aethlebert, Ina, and Alfred and through the age of Bracton, to the supremely important Magna Carta, the English Bill of Rights and up through the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution of the United States.
After the event, I received this kind note from one of the law students.
Please express my thanks to Mr. Phillips for taking time out of his schedule to come speak with us and encourage us last night. It is rare that we hear individuals admonish us from both a Biblical and an historical perspective to keep families first; I hope it becomes less rare in the years to come. And thank you as well for serving him in the capacity that you do. I am one of those “public interest lawyers” that Mr. Phillips was talking about at lunch, or so I perceive to be God’s eventual calling on my life. Matthew, Liberty Law

Every couple of months or so, some ambitious evolutionist in search of additional grant money and publishing deals comes out with a fabulous new discovery. Often, these “discoveries” have their brief day in the sun. They make headline news, create buzz, but no sooner have they arrived, then they tend to go quietly into the night.
Why? Because bad science pays. It motivates politicians to fund projects. And it still makes headlines.
Not too long ago (August 7, 1996), NASA scientists held a historic press conference indicating that they found evidence of life on Mars. It was front page news, but today it is merely an embarasment.
In fact the history of the rise of evolutionary science is replete with overt frauds (remember piltdown man), misrepresentation, and hyperbole.
Here is the latest silliness: a “4.4 million year-old” fossil is supposed to once again rewrite the story of human origins. Click here to read this morning’s USA Today front-page story about a fossil discovery that is sending shock waves through the scientific community. And visit the official The Mysterious Islands website to learn more about our exciting film project that glorifies the Creator God for the true story of origins.
