The Birmingham News Profiles PCA-Affiliated Professor Who Believes Christianity and Evolution are Compatible

A number of years ago the conservative Presbyterian Church in America (“PCA”) denomination went through a tumultuous battle on the issue of creation and evolution. Regretfully, the compromise position with evolution made significant headway, and defenders of the historical position on six-day creation were defeated in their efforts to maintain as a position of orthodoxy, the historical, grammatical approach to interpreting the Genesis account of origins. The fruit of such compromises continue to work themselves out in the American church. Now a member of the same PCA denomination has made the news with his own attempt to advance evolutionism in the government schools by making it “less offensive” to the religious belief of students.

This past weekend The Birmingham News published a story on UAB professor Lee Meadows—a professing Christian—who has recently published a book entitled “Missing Link”— a textbook on how to teach evolution to middle school and high school children without offending their religious beliefs.

To justify his position Professor Meadows borrows from the same neutrality postulate advanced by leading atheists and agnostics when defending the legitimacy of evolution—namely, the myth that evolution is about science, and creation is about religion. The idea here is that science (and the scientists who are advancing evolution) are free from faith assumptions, that their conclusions are based on reason and factual analysis, and are unimpaired by religious presuppositions. This is why Professor Meadows is comfortable repeating the mantra so often recited by atheists that “creationism...is inherently religious,” but evolution is about pure science.

And this is precisely the untruth which the film The Mysterious Islands addresses. It is not accidental that for the last century and a half the leading proponents of evolutionary thinking from Charles Darwin to Julian Huxley to Richard Dawkins are some of the most notorious blasphemers and God-haters of their respective generations—their theory of origins, like their view of Christianity, are driven by deeply-held, unprovable, faith-driven, religious commitments about the universe, the authority of man’s autonomous reason, and the nature of reality itself.

And the more they proclaim their own neutrality, and the objectivity of their self-destructing theory of evolution, the sillier they look. The truth is this: brute factuality does not exist—all facts must be interpreted. Every scientist (both creationist and evolutionist) bring a priori, faith driven assumptions to the table when they interpret facts. The Mysterious Islands examines the way the faith assumptions of evolutionists condition their interpretation of the data. It also draws from Darwin’s own testimony of anti-biblical prejudice which he brought to the Galapagos to demonstrate that he reached the wrong conclusions, not because he lacked facts, but because his faulty (and highly religious) assumptions drove his interpretation of the facts.

Happy Thanksgiving

A Thanksgiving Tribute: A Multi-Generational Vision of Gratitude

“Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all.

Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all.

Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name.”

I Chronicles 29:11-13

We have so much for which to be thankful. Praise the Lord!

This Thanksgiving let’s stop and truly pour out our hearts before the Lord, sharing with him our thanksgiving and praise for what He has done for us. Let’s also give our children the necessary historical context for our national day of Thanksgiving by reflecting on the wonder and greatness of all that God accomplished through our Pilgrim fathers.

I recently wrote an article for Homeschooling Today Magazine that explores this theme. The four points I encouraged families to pursue are as follows: 1) Remember the God-blessed Visions of the Past; 2) Reaffirm the True Spiritual Foundations of Our National Days of Thanksgiving; 3) Rally Your Children to the Great Work of Family Reformation; and 4) Crave the Blessings of the Righteous Man.

Captain John Smith and the Pilgrims

Arguably, John Smith was one of the most capable and manly individuals in American history. More than any other individual, he was the providential tool of God to hold the Jamestown colony together. Note that he was given an opportunity play a similar role for the Pilgrim fathers.

“In 1619 Smith himself offered to act as a guide to the Pilgrims, but they turned down his offer, probably because of their precarious financial position, or because of a commitment to Myles Standish. Smith’s experience might well have helped through the first winter. He said as much later: “Their humorous ignorances caused them for more than a year to endure a wonderful deal of misery with infinite patience.”

Behind the Scenes at the Alabama Premiere of The Mysterious Islands

More Than 1300 Attend The Mysterious Islands on the Anniversary of Darwin's Book

The historic Alabama Theater was brimming with people as more than 1300 attended the premiere of The Mysterious Islands on the 150th anniversary of the publication of Darwin’s On the Origin of Species. Built in the 1920’s, before the Scopes Trial, this gorgeous facility was the ideal location for the hundreds of home educators, Christian students, lawmakers and public officials and Christian leaders to come to be reminded of the raging war of the worldviews between the religious worldview of evolutionary scientism, and the worldview of biblical Christianity which guided the founding fathers of this nation.

The evening opened with a magnanimous introduction by Senator Hank Erwin, who introduced a number of the dignitaries present including Alabama Supreme Court Justice Tom Parker, and was followed by a brief commentary from Doug Phillips who reminded the audience that while “evolutionists, atheists and agnostics around the world of many stripes are celebrating what they believe to be the victory of Darwin on this anniversary night, we are here to proclaim that Jesus Christ is the creator who reigns victorious over the vain speculations of science, so-called.”

The audience responded to the conclusion of the film with a gracious standing ovation, and the screening was followed by a Q and A with the filmmakers, a composer, and members of the team that travelled to the Galapagos. After the premiere, cast members signed posters and photos for those in attendance.

The Mysterious Islands will premiere in Huntsville tonight, at the Space Center.

Sold Out: U.S. Space and Rocket Center Showing In Huntsville of The Mysterious Islands is Full

With gratitude to God for his incredible blessing on our Mysterious Islands Road Tour as we have traveled to several cities across America to premiere the film, we will be rolling into the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, for a premiere tonight. Regretfully, we are at full capacity, are not able to take anymore registrations. Just last week we were not sure if we were going to be able to show the film at the USSRC, but God was kind and opened the doors for this to happen tonight.

Huntsville Times Reports on The Mysterious Islands

Yesterday, the Huntsville Times ran this story about the Mysterious Islands being shown at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center tonight:

HUNTSVILLE, AL - Celebrate the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin’s “Origin of the Species” by exploring the Galapagos Islands with filmmakers Jon and Andy Erwin through their new documentary, “The Mysterious Islands.”

The 90-minute film will be screened Wednesday, Nov. 25, at 6:30 p.m. at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. Admission is $10 for a family, $5 for individuals.

Because of limited space, reserve a place by contacting Joshua Walsh at JoshuaDirect@gmail.com, 352-408-6190.

“The Mysterious Islands” follows Joshua Phillips, 16, son of the film’s producer, as he looks at the same animals and adaptations seen by Darwin, but comes to a very different conclusion, ones he terms “mediated design,” in which God remains creator of all, working through Creation.

Vision Forum produced the film by Birmingham natives Jon and Andy Erwin, who have won Dove Awards for their Christian music videos. The film, released Nov. 13., offers a pro-Creationism view of the islands on which Darwin formulated the theories that would become the basis for the evolutionary model of cosmic and human development. Dr. John Morris, president of the Institute for Creation Research, contributes to the film.

Check out the Web site, whether or not you can make the movie, which is being offered here as the Erwin brothers drive from Birmingham on to their next stop on the film’s debut. I’ve always figured however Creation occurred, it is a miracle, and the gorgeous photography of these intriguing islands bear that out, however it is that you personally fit God into the story of how things came to be and to become.

Today is the Day: 150 Years Ago Darwin's Theory Was Officially Published, VFM and Hundreds of Alabamians Celebrate Christ the Creator's Victory Over The Vain Scientific Imaginations of Man With the Birmingham Premiere of The Mysterious Islands

Here We Are!

Today is the 150th anniversary of Darwin’s On the Origin of Species. More than any other book of the last one thousand years, this book has contributed to untold millions abandoning faith in God and embracing a new religion of man, to some of the most evil social engineering experiments in the recorded history of mankind, and to the genocidal bloodshed of the twentieth century.

The application of Darwin’s ideas to social theory, economics, and education has helped to usher in a world of abortion, child prevention, evolution-driven racism, Marxism, pseudo-science, animal rights activism, and even obsession with alien beings. Our children live on the outskirts of a Darwinian century, and for so many, their view of the world has been fundamentally poisoned by the far-reaching faith-driven premises of evolutionism.

But while evolutionists of every stripe, including atheists, agnostics, advocates for eugenics, abortionists, and even false professors of Christianity gleefully celebrate Darwin’s anniversary, Vision Forum Ministries will be standing in Birmingham, Alabama tonight, to proclaim the Lordship of Jesus Christ, and the absolute victory and truth of the message of our Creator.

As far as I know, we are the only group which is offering a significant Christian response on the actual date of the anniversary. This is a great privilege and honor and we hope to offer encouragement to those gathered to watch The Mysterious Islands premiere, as well as to Christians around the world.

Click here to attend the Birmingham premiere tonight.

Vision Forum Agrees with Richard Dawkins--There is No Room for God in Darwinism.

CNN reports today that evolutionary scientist and professional religious skeptic Richard Dawkins has argued that evolution and God are mutually incompatible. On this point we completely agree. This being said, Dawkins fails to acknowledge the religious nature of his own evolutionary scientism. He is correct in recognizing the complete incompatibility of evolution with Christianity, but he is dead wrong when he asserts that science and religion are incompatible. Whether it is openness to the bizarre theory of human origins known as panspermia, or his faith-driven religious commitment to the unproven assumptions of evolutionary theory, Dawkins appears to be one of the most religious men of our day—except for everyone else.

However, according to the CNN report, Dawkins believes he is in a “state of war” with creationists in defending the tenets of Darwinism or evolution which he thinks are one in the same. The Bible teaches that all men have an object of worship. They either worship and serve the creature or they worship and serve the Creator (Romans1:25), but they definitely worship something. Dawkins’ incessant harping and overt blaspheming against the Bible and the God of Scriptures reflects the true nature of his own religious devotion.

To read more of Dawkins comments on the anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin’s On The Origins of Species, in an article entitled “Darwinism and the Case for ‘Militant Atheism’” click here. To watch a rebuttal of Dawkins’ comments on the flightless cormorant delivered at the Galapagos Islands see the bonus features of The Mysterious Islands DVD.

The Mysterious Islands Road Tour Arrives in Georgia For Church Screening In Newnan, But First A Visit to the Home of Dr. Joe Morecraft

We thank the Lord for a wonderful church screening in Newnan, Georgia last night. Several hundred attended and the response to the film was tremendous.

Before the screening we enjoyed some real Georgia barbecue at a local family-run establishment which has been in business since 1926.

We were amazed to find a picture of one of Beall’s close Christian friends from college days on the wall. What a small world!

Special thanks to the Brant Frost IV family for being such gracious hosts.

There were many precious families with us in Georgia, including the Isaac Weathers family.

On our way to Newnan, the Galapagos Ark stopped by the home of Dr. Joseph Morecraft, one of the great defenders of the Faith alive today. It was easy to identify the home of Dr. Morecraft from the Ten Commandments marker outside.

Our hero!

Hold on to your hats. This is an image I saw in the Morecraft home of Dr. Joe and myself from 1987. Look at that kid! This has been a very sweet and multi-generational friendship between our families for a quarter of a century. Praise the Lord! This reminds me that one of my greatest joys in life is the sweetness of those friendships built on many years of shared experiences, joys, sorrows, battles, and victories. You will only have a few in life, and they are very precious—so tenaciously hold on to them!

Here, the Little Boy With the Red Boots, sword in hand, sits in the Teddy Roosevelt chair (formerly sold by Vision Forum) of the great Presbyterian patriarch!

Children and Adults Respond to The Mysterious Islands

Hi! My name is Anna and I am 11. I LOVE your movie “The Mysterious Islands”! I saw it with my friends and enjoyed it. I like how it talked about the effects of Evolution. You have great products that encourage Christ. Thanks for all you do! Sincerely, Anna H.

Dear Mr. Phillips, Thank you so much for The Mysterious Islands documentary. I immensely enjoyed watching it tonight at the Newnan premiere; it was such a blessing. My family has purchased several copies to give as Christmas presents (one for my unbelieving grandfather), and I am looking forward to watching it again in the near future. Thank you for all that y’all do! Blessings) Hannah, from Fayetteville, GA.

We were able to attend the GA premier of The Mysterious Islands in Newnan last night. We really enjoyed the movie and I especially enjoyed getting to talk to Mr. Phillips and his family. I am amazed at what awesome footage they got, considering how little time they had to shoot on the Islands. It is clear that the Lord’s blessing is on this project. I will continue to pray for it. May the truth of God’s word be spread through this film, and may it bring many to salvation! Tiffany

Victory in Huntsville!

We want to commend the U.S. Space and Rocket Center (“USSRC”) for opening its facilities to host a private screening of The Mysterious Islands this week. Last week, I reported that Vision Forum was denied an opportunity to rent out a theater at the USSRC in Huntsville, Alabama after we were told we could do so on the date we wanted, November 25. We appealed the decision and found out from talking to the person in charge that the reason we were denied was because The Mysterious Islands was deemed “inappropriate” for this venue because it dealt with evolution.

Knowing that the USSRC was a government facility we contacted attorneys at the Alliance Defense Fund (“ADF”) for assistance. Today, attorneys at ADF sent a letter to the CEO of the USSRC on our behalf informing him of our First Amendment rights in this situation and asking for the USSRC to reconsider its decision. You can read the informative letter that explains our First Amendment rights by clicking here.

After sending this letter, first thing this morning we received a call from the CEO of the USSRC letting us know that they are now looking forward to having us host our screening of The Mysterious Islands at the USSRC on Wednesday night. The USSRC staff were cordial throughout the whole process and promptly responded after being informed regarding First Amendment rights in public facilities.

We are thankful for the willingness of the USSRC to work with us in this screening and we are grateful for the wonderful work of ADF.

If you are in the Huntsville, Alabama area please come out and join us at the USSRC, and why not make an entire day of it by enjoying the wonderful facility they have before viewing the screening of The Mysterious Islands?

To register to attend this event, please click here.

The Mysterious Islands Road Tour Goes To Newnan, Georgia for a Church Screening

If you are in the Newnan, Georgia area we hope you will consider joining us for a private church showing of The Mysterious Islands at the Grace Community Fellowship tonight. After the screening we will be holding a Q&A session and signing The Mysterious Islands posters. Admission is free, but seating is limited so please e-mail themysteriousislandsnewnan@numail.org or call 678-378-3577. Grace Community Fellowship 75 Roscoe Rd Newnan GA.

On November 24, the 150th Anniversary of Darwin's Theory, More Than One Thousand Will Gather at the Historic Alabama Theater for the Birmingham Premiere of The Mysterious Islands--And You Are Invited!

This Tuesday, November 24th, atheists, agnostics, and proponents of abortion, eugenics, feminism, and Marxism around the world will be celebrating the highest holy day of the modern evolutionary faith. And they have been waiting 150 years for the celebration! It was on this day in 1859 that Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species—and the world was never the same.

But for up to 2400 Alabamians, this November 24 will look a bit different. On this day, The Mysterious Islands will premiere at the historic Alabama Theater. Viewers will be transported to the far side of the world, where they will meet the strange and unusual inhabitants of a remote island archipelago called the Galapagos. There they will join Dr. John Morris, president of the Institute for Creation Research, Doug Phillips, president of Vision Forum Ministries and a team of adventurers as they cross the black lava rocks of Fernandina Island, track down the ancient Galapagos Tortoise, study the flightless cormorant and salt-sneezing marine iguana, and encounter the dive-bombing, blue-footed booby. Some of the team will even travel far beneath the surface and film without a cage around more than one hundred sharks.

At the Galapagos, the team will battle a theory that changed the modern world, because it was there on Galapagos that the modern war of the world-views began. Christians look to Jerusalem, Muslims to Mecca, but for throngs of the evolutionary faithful, it is Galapagos which is the spiritual center of their man-centered faith. And that is why you need to join the Mysterious Islands team on this extraordinary and surprising journey to “Darwin’s Eden.”

Come to the Alabama Theater in Birmingham to watch the new creation adventure film, The Mysterious Islands, this November 24, for the 150th anniversary of the publication of Darwin’s magnum opus, On the Origin of Species.

Where did Charles Darwin go wrong with his Theory of Evolution? Did he arrive at the Galapagos as an objective observer and thinker? What were the far-reaching implications of Darwin’s theory? How has Darwin’s understanding of natural selection and the struggle for survival of fittest empowered some of the most destructive philosophies and social agendas of the 20th century?

Come join us as we answer this question as part of a night to remember as the new and controversial film, The Mysterious Islands, comes to Birmingham for a special premiere screening. Meet the film’s executive producer and members of the cast in person and get a behind-the-scenes experience you will never forget.

The screening will be held November 24. The door opens at 6:15, and the ninety minute film will start at 7:00 p.m. Following the screening there will be a short Q and A with filmmakers and crew, and then a poster signing and picture signing with cast and crew.

The cost of the evening’s premiere is $10 per family. Space is limited and you must R.S.V.P. Get the word out and come be a part of this special film debut.

We hope to see you at the Alabama Theater.

Worldnetdaily.com Reports on The Mysterious Islands

Yesterday, Worldnetdaily.com ran this story about our new film The Mysterious Islands:

Just in time for the 150th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species,” a team of Christian scientists has traveled back in time to the birthplace of evolution to “prove Darwin wrong.”

The scientists have embarked on a journey to the Galapagos Islands, the same island chain Darwin visited during the voyage of the HMS Beagle in 1835. Many scholars today agree that the animals and plants Darwin saw on those islands contributed greatly to his becoming an evolutionist.

Convinced that different species had evolved from common ancestors, Darwin began forming his theory of evolution within two years of the ship’s return to England in 1836. His 1859 book “On the Origin of Species” became the impetus for persuading many members of the scientific community to accept evolution in the 1860s.

But upon returning to the very spot Charles Darwin arrived 174 years ago, the Christian scientists have examined the same unusual creatures Darwin saw - and they’ve documented their findings in a 90-minute Vision Forum Ministries film titled, “The Mysterious Islands: A Surprising Journey to Darwin’s Eden.” The documentary was shot and directed by award-winning Jon and Andy Erwin of Erwin Brothers Motion Pictures.

Their mission: Determine whether the Galapagos Islands, resting above vast tectonic plates, are a laboratory for evolution as Darwin believed - or a truly magnificent showcase of God’s creation.

Charles Darwin goes to the Galapagos Islands

Doug Phillips, executive producer of the film, explained that prior to leaving on the HMS Beagle with Capt. Robert FitzRoy, Darwin had served as a student at seminary where he was studying to be a clergyman. Though he had no formal training in naturalism, Darwin took on the position of a naturalist on the five-year journey that would take him around the world and culminate in a visit to the Galapagos Archipelago.

The Galapagos Islands, located 600 miles off the coast of South America, contain some of the most exotic creatures and land formations found anywhere in the world.

Charles Darwin

“When he reached the Galapagos Islands, Darwin was already settled in his mind on a number of important issues,” Phillips told WND. “He had become very much a cynic and a skeptic of Christianity and the Bible. In his autobiography he specifically said that he viewed the Bible as a book of mythology that was closer to the history that would come from ‘barbarians’ than actual truth.”

By the time Darwin arrived at the Galapagos Islands, he had finished reading “Principles of Geology” by Charles Lyell and had learned to interpret the world through the lens of “millions” of years, Phillips said. Through the combination of Darwin’s distrust for the Bible and acceptance of Lyell’s concepts, Darwin sought a unified theory of origins that would explain where mankind originated, he argues.

“Darwin shot and collected more than 30 different types of birds, finches and mocking birds, although he didn’t know what they were at the time,” Phillips said. “He noted that the animals were very similar to the animals he found in South America, but they had some distinctions.”

Darwin began to question why the animals would look so similar to animals in South America and yet have such clear distinctions. He took notes on the variations.

“It wouldn’t be for about 25 years later that he took all his experiences from the Galapagos Islands and synthesized them with the help of men like Thomas Malthus, who was a population control theorist. With Malthus and the influences of others, he began to formulate a theory of evolution,” Phillips said. “His presuppositions had changed in a very atheistic, agnostic way, and he was looking for answers to try to come up with a theory that would explain life apart from Scripture and apart from Christian worldview.”

‘Everything from shells’

Phillips pointed out that Darwin did not invent the idea of evolution. His grandfather, Erasmus Darwin, wrote a book titled “Zoönomia,” arguing that everything has evolved from lower life forms. Erasmus gave the Darwin family a motto translated as “Everything from shells.”

“So Darwin grew up believing in evolution,” Phillips said. “He didn’t come up with evolution. What made him special was that he was the first guy to give a mechanism for a unified theory of evolution in which all of life evolved from a simple-cell organism. And the mechanism he gave was this concept of natural selection, an idea that was sparked at the Galapagos Islands.”

Feedback from the Tampa Premiere of The Mysterious Islands

Here’s a note we received from a family who attended the Tampa premiere of The Mysterious Islands:

Dear Bro. Phillips and the Vision Forum Family,

When we got the news last week, our grandchildren were brimming with excitement at the opportunity to attend the premiere of the “Mysterious Islands” feature film. Calendars were marked, schedules were checked, and days were counted down!

The actual film exceeded our expectations in quality and especially content. And the fellowship with other like-hearted believers was, once again, precious. In spite of a couple of “glitches”, the evening was well worth the effort to make the trip and time investment.

We bought a DVD to share with family and friends right away and plan to buy more as gifts. What a blessing to have a quality production in which the major theme was one of excellence: all Creation shouts the glory of God! And the sub-theme was touching as well as instructive: visionary fathers honored by faithful sons.

Thank God, you have pressed forward with a vision, and God has used it, once again, to bless and encourage our family and thousands of others. May He continue to use you and your family in this vital work.

The Mysterious Island Rejected for Screening by The Huntsville Space Center Because It is 'Too Controversial' to be Critical of Charles Darwin's Theory

After being given preliminary approval for a screening of The Mysterious Islands film, officials at the United States Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, have rejected the film which is critical of Charles Darwin, as being too controversial.

A representative for Vision Forum Ministries had been given a preliminary go-ahead by event coordinators for the Space Center, but was later informed that The Mysterious Islands would be blocked from appearing at the theater after officials looked at the website and deemed the film too controversial.

The theater of the Davidson Center Auditorium at the United States Space and Rocket Center is a government-run agency and taxpayer-subsidized venue which is open to the general public for private rentals and screenings. According to federal law, it is not supposed to discriminate on the basis of religion.

A Few Things About Cats

In my book, The Little Boy Down the Road, there is a chapter entitled “The Animal Fair” which details our life with dozens of dogs, hundreds of hamsters, a killer goose, rebellious goats, evil llamas, aged horses, and sundry other animals including arachnids and birds. But here are a few small thoughts I failed to mention about cats.

There are several important things to remember about these felines. First, it is important to keep in mind that cats are not clean, they are just covered with cat spit.

A cat is a walking heart attack. Its heart beats twice as fast as a human—at about 240 beats per minute. But rumor has it that if your children attempt to dress the cat up in a gown and pretend to baptize it in the tub, you can double that heart beat.

Finally, I just want to express my personal gratitude to our cats for allowing us to live in their home.

Behind the Scenes With The Mysterious Islands: The Young Charles Darwin

Vision Forum Ministries’ new film, The Mysterious Islands, not only takes you under the water, on volcanic craters, and across lizard laden fields of black lava rocks, but it shows you the multi-generational legacy of skepticism and evolutionism in the Darwin family and its spiritual progeny.

Darwin is often presented as a reasonable observer and adherent to biblical Christianity who was just in search of answers. The truth is that from his early days, Darwin was influenced by family members who had utter contempt for the Bible.

From grandfather Erasmus Darwin, Charles was taught that the world was millions of years old and that the scientific teachings of the Bible were absurd.

Erasmus Darwin even gave the Darwin family a new motto: E Conchis Omnia—Everything from Shells!

Young Charles learned to be excited about discovery, but the religious skeptics in his family modelled an approach to scientific investigation which was at war with the God of Scriptures.

Michael Billings: Remembering a Great Man of God on the Two-Year Anniversary of His Death

Today is the two-year anniversary of the home-going of my dear friend and son in the Lord Michael Billings. Two years ago today, the Lord chose to take Michael into eternity, but his testimony has become as that of Abel’s. Even now, two year after leaving us, “he being dead yet speaketh” (Hebrews 11:4).

The video above includes the musical tribute Benjamin Botkin composed along with a photo presentation of his life from the past few years. You can download a copy of this beautiful musical composition for free by going today to bluebehemoth.com.

Captain Fitzroy's Sword To Be Auctioned

Captain Robert Fitzroy brought Charles Darwin with him as a companion on the famous voyage of the R.M.S. Beagle. But later Fitzroy deeply regretted the decision. A defender of the Genesis account of origins, Fitzroy publicly opposed Darwin’s Theory. In many respects Fitzroy was a better naturalist than Darwin. Unlike Darwin, he properly labelled and identified the specimens he collected. In later years Fitzroy wrote an extensive treatise defending the Biblical account of earth history, and he formally confronted Thomas Huxley during the most famous debate of the 19th century when he addressed the audience and urged them to believe God’s Word over the vain speculations of man.

Now you could own Captain Fitzroy’s sword that he carried on the voyage of the HMS Beagle. Here is the auction notice that was sent out via an email that includes some historical background on the sword and Fitzroy:

A fine and interesting presentation sword, presented by Lord Hardinge, Governor-General of India, to Admiral Robert Fitzroy, Captain of the ‘Beagle’ on Charles Darwin’s legendary voyage of discovery.
The 80cm wide flat solid blade perhaps imitating an Indian tulwar blade with the proof mark of Henry Wilkinson of London struck under the langet, the blade is un-numbered and undecorated except for the short presentation inscription ‘Robert Fitz Roy from Lord Hardinge’, etched within an ornate eastern style cartouche; on the reverse side of the blade a similar cartouche is filled with a long inscription in Persian incorporating the date 1847, the cartouche and inscription in heavy gold overlay, the hilt of Indian make of mameluke style and although now lightly patinated would appear to be of watered steel, with the typical open panels which would display this, the hilt is decorated with fine quality intricate gold koftghari floral borders, the quillons with sprays of flowers, no provision for a sword knot, contained in its fine quality black leather scabbard with three large copper gilt mounts, the top locket with opposing hanging rings, the centre mount with a single ring, and bottom chape, all of which are covered with deeply chased sprays of acorns and oak leaves, the bottom chape additionally chased with a seashell and intwined dolphins, the locket back with applied embossed shield with makers details ‘Henry Wilkinson gun & sword maker Pall Mall London’, minor staining to blade, a little wear to highlights of gold koftghari, some wear to gilding of scabbard mounts and scabbard stitching fragile, but overall in good condition.

Footnote

The Persian inscription on this blade is dated 1264 in the Hijra calendar, which equates to 1847 in the Christian calendar; it is also dated using the arabic numbers for 1847, a most unusual practice. The Persian inscription literally translates as follows:

‘The blade of this sword will shine if it is used for the right cause. With the wrong cause, it will rust and the rust will become its scabbard’.
