The Hard Reality of the Colossal Devastation in Port Au Prince

Every Child Has a Story

Every child has a story. This little girl was orphaned in a mountainous region of Haiti. My friend, Dan Grady, saw her there and handed her a food bar to eat. She immediately broke it into little pieces, took one piece for herself, but gave the rest away to the other hungry children who were her friends. Today she is cared for at the Haiti Children Rescue Mission, where she continues to have a reputation for kindness and generosity. (She is pictured below with Peter Bradrick.)

Two Orphans Waiting for Adoption

These are Johnny and Mozilla. They are about 1 and 7 years old respectively. I worked on this blog today at the orphanage where Mozilla and Johhny live. Like so many of these precious children, they crave the love and attention of a father or mother. Mozilla was fascinated by my computer. Cautiously at first she watched my work over my shoulders. Then she climbed in my lap. Then she clung very tightly. Finally, when we set up our portable sattelite link so I could post blogs, she decided to braid my hair for me. [Don’t try to picture what I look like please—it was funny, but quite scary.] It was very hard to say goodbye and leave for our next location of the day.

She Has Lived Through One Hundred and Ten Years of Difficulties in Haiti, But Nothing Like This

We met this dear lady, and were told by her family and friends that she was one hundred and ten years old. Her house was destroyed, and today she is living on the ground under a plastic covering in a park with a thousand other homeless victims of the earthquake. We were told that though she had lived through many tumultuous events in Haiti, nothing compares to the great earthquake of January, 2010.

This little girl and her brother (not pictured) are both orphans, and sweet as can be.

Shoes That Will Never Be Worn Again

These are the shoes that once belonged to some of the more than fifty boys and girls between the age of one month and eight years, who were trapped in the rubble and are presumed dead at the Notre Dame orphanage in Haiti.

Just Days After the Quake a Mom Gives Birth In A Tent By the Street

Amidst the devastation of the great Haitian earthquake, God was kind to bring new life into the world. This young mother had her baby in a tent by the side of the road near one of the orphanages not destroyed by the quake.

Rescue Haiti's Children

In less than 24 hours, I will be boarding a plane on an important mission bound for Haiti. I am writing because I need your help.

Here is the story.

My mission to Haiti is four-fold: First, I will be establishing one of the only distinctively Christian reporting operations to tell stories of both the present crisis and the work of Christians on behalf of the sick and the widows and the orphans in the midst of Haiti’s present horror. Second, I will be working to facilitate the rescue and delivery of orphans to Christian families in America. Third, I will be identifying specific families that need direct support from the people of God in America. Fourth, my team will be providing specific relief to people in distress.

My starting team is seven individuals, including an experienced medical doctor, a logistics crew, and a film production team for news reportage. I should be joined by additional team members in Haiti including a driver, translator, and possibly more physicians in the days to come.

I believe that I can play a special role in getting important stories out to the people of God in a timely and meaningful way. I also believe that I can be effective in helping some of the most important Christian ministries to get the attention they need. I believe that we can be successful, by God’s grace, in meeting urgent medical needs of the sick and wounded in the wake of the recent disaster, documenting the needs of orphans in crisis, and helping to facilitate a plan to connect orphans with the very best families who can care for them.

Our camera team will document the story, and I will be posting regular video updates and written commentary on our outreach to Haiti as it unfolds. You can follow these updates on my blog, as well as on Facebook and Twitter. My staff will also be making them available through YouTube to the general public. WorldNetDaily has agreed to publish articles I write on Haiti as exclusive commentary on their website to help maximize the reach of our message. Our goal is to reach a broad audience with the details of our ministry in Haiti, and the outlet through WND will help in accomplishing this.

As I’m sure you know, the devastation in Haiti has been overwhelming. More people have died as a result of this earthquake than died in either the Nagasaki or Hiroshima bombings at the close of WWII. Already, the death toll from the earthquake ranks it among the top five most deadly natural disasters in the last century and the top twenty in recorded history. And the death count only continues to climb.

Our goal is to be ministers of Christ in the wake of this enormous disaster — to help rescue Haiti’s children — and we would solicit your prayers and support for this enterprise.

Here’s where things stand: Our transportation to Haiti has been secured. A private jet has been made available for our use to the country. We have transportation and an interpreter who will be guiding us through the disaster zones. We have a clear plan in place to make the most of our mission.

But we need help with the expenses including our technical needs, satellite broadcast feeds (which are expensive), equipment, supplies, and air transportation back through the Dominican Republic to America, in the likely circumstance that we are unable to get out through Port-au-Prince.

I have had to move quickly: I have made the decision to go even before all the funds have been provided; but I would sincerely ask for your consideration in supporting us on this important project. I would appreciate your support, be it prayer or financial assistance, for our mission. Donations to help our effort can be made online. Click here to donate.

Please stay tuned for our broadcasts and articles. May the Lord be pleased to use our humble efforts at this time of intense crisis.

Your friend in Christ, Doug Phillips

Eco Terrorist Paul Watson of Sea Shepherds Responds to The Mysterious Islands Press Release By Analogizing Faith in God to Belief In Darth Vader, Misrepresenting His Criminal Record, And Reaffirming His Views on Earthworms vs. Humans

Somewhere down near Antarctica, eco-terrrorist Paul Watson got a copy of The Mysterious Islands press release entitled: “The Whaling Controversy Resolved: ‘Mysterious Islands’ DVD Shows Sea Shepherd Pirates to Be Darwinian Extremists.” Mr. Watson, a self-proclaimed pirate, who has been convicted of criminal activities on at least three occasions and sentenced to jail at least three times for more than a collective year-and-a-half imprisonment for his violent activities and violation of laws, misleads his readers about his criminal record by claiming that he has never been convicted of a “felony” (a charge the TMI press release did not assert). In his official response, Watson repeatedly uses doublespeak when addressing questions of legal vs, illegal activities, violence, etc.; he analogizes faith in God to belief in Darth Vader; and he offers more evidence of his religiously motivated vitriol against Christianity, even as he prioritizes earthworms and fish over human beings. (See also Facebook) Below are his comments:

Sea Shepherd is a Fundamentalist Darwinist Anti-God Organization Interfering with God’s Divine Plan to Have the Japanese Illegally Slaughter the Whales!

Who would have thought?

Commentary by Captain Paul Watson

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is a controversial organization and because of this we expect to receive a wide spectrum of response ranging from complete support for our efforts to total condemnation. Our list of detractors includes Japanese whalers, those who support Japanese whaling, those who oppose whaling as well as our tactics, and those who oppose whaling, support our tactics but don’t support us on the grounds that we are not “aggressive” enough. The reasons are numerous, sometimes thought out, but most times not. Not that it matters, we don’t do what we do for people and we don’t really care what people think about us. Our clients are the species of the sea: whales, dolphins, sharks, turtles, fish, seabirds, crabs and mollusks, krill etc.

But every once in awhile an article comes to our attention which is so ridiculously bizarre that we can do nothing else but view it with a detached amusement. The article below from the Christian News Wire is such an article. Short on facts, long on unsubstantiated accusations, and totally bizarre with its silly conclusions.

Receiving this gem of nut bar journalism today, I could not wait to post it in the crew’s mess room for their enjoyment.

It turns out you see that the only reason we are down here in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary protecting whales is because we are fundamentalist extremist disciples of Charles Darwin. Yes sir, Charles Darwin is to blame for this mess because he started people down the road of thinking for themselves, instead of blindly following the dictates and guidance of a silly over-rated book written by a gang of chauvinistic sheep herding thugs in the desert a few thousand years ago.

Anyhow, the article is attached below with my comments correcting the errors in fact and pointing out the contradictions of the author.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has a permanent base of operations in the Galapagos where we work in cooperation with the Galapagos National Park rangers and the Ecuadorian Federal Police to uphold conservation regulations and laws against poachers operating in the Galapagos Marine Reserve.

The Whaling Controversy Resolved: ‘Mysterious Islands’ DVD Shows Sea Shepherd Pirates to Be Darwinian Extremists

By Gregg Wooding

SAN ANTONIO, TX, Jan. 15 /Christian Newswire/ — Last week’s clash between the Japanese whaling ship, the ‘Shonan Maru’ and the ‘Ady Gil’, a vessel owned and manned by the eco-terrorist group Sea Shepherd, highlights an animal rights battle that was launched when Charles Darwin visited the Galapagos Islands in 1835 — a theme explored in detail on a featurette of ‘The Mysterious Islands’, a newly-released documentary that debunks the conclusions Darwin reaching during his famous voyage of the Beagle. The featurette — entitled ‘The Galapagos Whaling Controversy: A Christian Perspective’ — takes environmental groups such as Sea Shepherd, Greenpeace, and PETA head on, and shows how their anti-hunting and worshipful view of animals flows directly from Darwin’s theory of evolution.

Captain Paul Watson: The accusation that Sea Shepherd is an eco-terrorist organization is based on a strategy explained in my book Earthforce! where I point out that one of the fundamental strategies of propaganda is to repeat a lie so often that people begin to believe it. Accusations that Sea Shepherd is an eco-terrorist organization have no basis in fact. Since the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society was founded in 1977, we have not been convicted of a single felony crime, we have never been sued, and we have never caused a single injury. What we do is to oppose illegal activities like the poaching of whales from a Whale Sanctuary. Wooding also continues to use the term “animal rights” although Sea Shepherd is a marine conservation organization.

I found it interesting to discover how our activities come from Darwin’s theory of evolution, although Wooding should be corrected on that also because it is no longer a “theory” of evolution, it is a scientifically proven understanding of evolution.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society opposes Japanese whaling because it is illegal. Japan is violating international conservation law in numerous ways. We don’t worship whales; we work to protect them from poachers.

“The Galapagos Islands were not only a once-great international whaling hub, but —thanks to Charles Darwin — this archipelago holds the distinction of being the birthplace of the modern animal rights movement,” noted Doug Phillips, Executive Producer of ‘The Mysterious Islands’.

Captain Paul Watson: Thanks to unrestricted whaling, the great whales were eradicated from the waters around the Galapagos. They are now slowly recovering. I don’t think that Charles Darwin had any idea about animal rights. His work focused on the reality of evolution. He was a scientist.

“Darwin argued that man is not a unique creature supernaturally created by God in His image with a responsibility to exercise dominion over creation, but he is simply another animal,” Phillips stated. “Radical environmentalists embrace this as their starting point and thus view man of no greater significance than a fish, a frog, or a whale.”

Captain Paul Watson: Human beings are not unique. After some three billion years of evolution on this planet, humans appeared in the last million years and the myth of God was created sometime during the last ten thousand years. Human beings are, in fact, animals. We are not some sort of semi-divine supernatural being. If anything we are merely overly conceited naked apes that have become divine legends in our own minds.

The fact is that the ecological law of diversity dictates that diversity of species is essential for the survival of each species within that diversity. Humans are equal to other species for the simple reason that if the other species were removed from the eco-systems that people inhabit, humans could not survive. Mutual survival bestows equality on all other species. We need them to exist. Without them we cannot exist therefore their importance is equal to our own within the context of the habitats that we occupy. There is nothing radical about nature. What is radical is the idea that we are above and apart from nature and this is an idea that emerged relatively late in human evolution. It is this idea that created religion and religion is little more than a form of collective mass psychosis, the fanatical belief in fantasy worlds that have no basis in reality.

“The Galapagos Whaling Controversy: A Christian Perspective” takes specific aim at Sea Shepherd, an animal rights group founded by Paul Watson who previously helped start Greenpeace before being ousted from their board due to his extreme tactics.

Captain Paul Watson: I am honestly flattered to be the main protagonist in this absurd documentary. However the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is not an animal rights organization - we are a marine conservation anti-poaching organization.

“The liberal news media and Discovery Channel’s popular reality show, Whale Wars, has sought to portray Paul Watson and his fellow Sea Shepherd cronies as folk heroes as they have repeatedly engaged in acts of terror on the high seas,” Phillips continued. “Watson’s recent charge of piracy against the ‘Shonan Maru’ is disingenuous doublespeak, as he has boasted of sinking numerous whaling vessels from Iceland to Antarctica over the years, visibly displaying images of the ships he has sunk on the side of his own renegade vessels. Watson has personally been convicted of sabotage many times over — he’s the real pirate in this whole affair.

Captain Paul Watson: If we have engaged in a single act of terrorism then we should be charged with a crime. The fact is that we have never been charged with a terrorist act let alone convicted. I was invited to give a lecture at the F.B.I. Academy in Quantico, Virginia in August 2009 where one agent remarked that Sea Shepherd walked a very fine line with the law. My answer was, and he did not dispute it, is that there is nothing wrong with walking a fine line as long as the laws are not broken. Sea Shepherd has never sunk a ship in Antarctica. Sea Shepherd has scuttled unmanned poaching vessels in Norway, Iceland, and Spain and not one of them resulted in a felony conviction because they were operating illegally. The statement that I have been personally convicted of sabotage many times over is simply a lie. I have never been convicted of a single felony in my entire life. But again, if the lie is repeated that I have, people begin to believe it.

“Watson has declared that ‘there’s nothing wrong with being a terrorist, as long as you win. Then you write the history,’” Phillips noted. “He has also said that ‘If you don’t know an answer, a fact, a statistic, then ... make it up on the spot.’ Watson is legendary as a yarn-spinner, and the news media has largely overlooked his chronic duplicity.”

Captain Paul Watson: I am a university lecturer and in my UCLA honors course on Science, Technology, and Ethics for the 21st Century I did say that history has demonstrated that “there’s nothing wrong with being a terrorist, as long as you win. Then you write the history.” I did indeed say that and it is a historical truth but it is not my opinion, it is merely an observation of fact. The writer has chosen to take the quote out of context in a deliberate attempt to demonize me. On the second quote that is also an observation of fact. I think it was President Ronald Reagan who put that particular media strategy into effect, a tradition now utilized by the FOX network every day.

The methods of the eco-terrorist group Sea Shepherd are well-documented and include the use of limpet mines to scuttle whaling boats, hurling bottles of foul-smelling butyric acid on rival ships, and rifle fire, among other violent tactics.

Captain Paul Watson: All Sea Shepherd tactics utilize only non-lethal approaches. Yes, we use rotten butter stink bombs and because rotten butter is butyric acid, just as milk is lactic acid, the use of the word “acid” is designed to make the substance sound deadly when in fact beer is more acidic than butyric acid. We don’t use explosives or firearms. The writer attempts to underscore this accusation with the description of “well documented” without providing or referring to the documentation he so casually mentions.

“Watson speaks regularly of the ‘virus of humanity’ and has declared openly that ‘in this war between our species and the others . . . I side most passionately with them against us, a proud traitor to my species,’” Phillips observed. “Watson has also stated that ‘earthworms are far more valuable than people’ and that he stands ‘in opposition to . . . those parasites who believe the Earth is here to serve human interests.’ His conclusion is a frightening one: ‘We need to radically and intelligently reduce human population to fewer than one billion.’”

Captain Paul Watson: I have said that the effect that human society has on the ecology of the planet is similar to the virus AIDS because we are eroding the immune systems of the planet through the destruction of bio-diversity. The fact is that earthworms are more important than people from an ecological perspective for the simple reason that earthworms can survive without people but people will not be able to survive without earthworms. People are dependent on earthworms; earthworms are not dependent upon humans. I do believe that the Earth was not created to serve the self-interest of a single species our own and my comment on population is simply to point out that the carrying capacity of the planet is not sufficient to support increasing human populations. By saying intelligently I was advocating voluntary reduction in births - not extermination camps as some rabid Christian writers have stated.

Phillips concluded: “Watson’s anti-human worldview flows from a radical brand of Darwinism that is at war with God. He and his Sea Shepherd associates reject the biblical teaching that man is God’s appointed steward over the creation. They advance their terrorist agenda with a twisted religious ferocity that shows that they worship the creature rather than the Creator.”

Captain Paul Watson: I am not at war with God. I don’t believe in God. This is an absurd statement and the writer may as well have accused me of being at war with Santa Claus or Darth Vader. I do indeed reject the biblical fantasies of a monkey God figure in the sky and if there were such a thing, he certainly has not demonstrated much expertise in stewardship considering the mass extinction of species we are presently responsible for. What is especially amusing is the writer accuses us of have a “twisted religious ferocity”.

We are a secular organization without any ties to any religion. We don’t worship whales; we are trying to keep them from being illegally slaughtered. This is equivalent to saying that a policeman worships money when he tries to stop a bank robbery.

“The Mysterious Islands” film — which comes with ‘The Galapagos Whaling Controversy’ bonus feature — was shot last year on the Galapagos Islands as the world celebrated the 200th anniversary of birth of Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his landmark book, On the Origins of Species. The film recently enjoyed successful premiers in ten cities across the nation, from Tampa to Birmingham, with opening night audiences of more than 2,500 and 1,300 moviegoers respectively.

Captain Paul Watson: Numbers do not make the truth. Scientific observation validates the truth.

The film retraces Darwin’s steps on the Galapagos and shows how he erred in his observations concerning the amazing and unusual creatures that inhabit these islands. The film’s conclusion: that the Galapagos Islands are a showcase for God’s creation, not a laboratory for evolution, as Darwin maintained.

Captain Paul Watson: There have been many studies since Charles Darwin most notably the book, The Beak of the Finch, which demonstrates the validity of natural selection.

Final questions: If there is a God why would he have created Charles Darwin to debunk him? If there is a God why is allowing his “showcase” in the Galapagos to be destroyed by poachers and human encroachment?

Response to Article on the Sea Shepherd

I have read your article you wrote for Christian News Wire. Sir, you have hit the nail directly on the head for Paul Watson and the SSCS. I have been debating this topic for months, now on the Whale Wars Facebook Sites, mainly the UK site. I have debated Paul Watson personally. I can tell you...the things he says about God and Christianity is an absolute disgrace...People follow this man blindly and donate every penny they can afford to him and his cause. Funny, but probably 80-90% of the followers are self proclaimed Athiests, also.

I am a Christian. I have stood up for my beliefs and the Christian beliefs of several of the members of the board to Paul Watson. I will not repeat what he has said, as all of it is harsh language, but I do have copies of his...well, we will call it a monologue. His hatred for the human race astounds me. His deep seated hatred for God and Christianity is...you know, I cannot even come up with words to describe it...

I support the making of this movie. It should bring a fresh perspective and view to a area that has too long, been associated with Darwin and his false teachings.

Sincerely, Dave B.

Saturday Online Mentoring with Geoffrey Botkin

My good friend Geoff Botkin is hosting a nine-week online mentoring course for men on Saturday mornings. I would encourage you to consider joining him and hundreds of other men around the country for this unique opportunity.

Saturday Online Mentoring with Geoffrey Botkin

The Problem

For three generations, American fathers have been progressively disconnected from their sons as the American family has become busier and more fragmented. Schoolteachers, football coaches, and youth ministers are no substitute for fathers when it comes to learning about the gritty issues of pop culture, pornography, girls, dates, wives, marriage, money, greed, investments, careers, personal priorities, and the great duties of manhood.

The Solution

For twenty-eight years Geoffrey Botkin has invested in the training of his five sons and has mentored other fathers who never learned from their own dads. By popular request, Mr. Botkin has started a nine-week mentoring course entitled “What Men Need to Know About Manhood”. Join Geoffrey Botkin online on Saturday mornings to discuss the practical issues of manhood. Hear Geoffrey share from Scripture and his own years of experience how to think and act like a Christian man amidst a culture which makes war on genuine manhood. These discussions will be extremely practical and interactive as men from across America bring their questions about their roles in work, husbanding, fatherhood, and the Church.

Some of the focus topics Geoffrey will address over this nine-week period:

—How to Defend the Faith: Love Your Wife —What Every Man Needs to Know Before He Dies —How Family Worship Changes the World —How to Think Like a Man in an Adolescent Culture —How to Fight Like a Man in a Defeated Culture —How You and Your Sons Can be Involved in Local Church Leadership —How to Take Command in Your Home —Understanding the Quadrivocational Mission —Why Long-term Planning is Essential to a Fruitful Legacy

Sessions take place between 9 and 10 a.m., Central Time, from January 2 through February 27, 2010. The cost for these nine sessions is $49 per man (sons may listen in with their fathers), and participants in this charter online class will receive a discount off the next. The sessions will be recorded and MP3s made freely available to participants shortly after each session, so that any who cannot join all nine sessions live may still hear what was discussed.

“Geoff is one of the most Godly, purposeful, intentional men I have ever had the privilege of knowing. The opportunity to partake in a mentoring time with him is of such great worth that I would take advantage of it at almost any price. I know this time will effect my family and those we encounter for generations to come.” - Dr. Ken Puckett

Interaction will take place via the GoToWebinar® interface, which works in-browser on any almost any PC or Mac. Mr. Botkin will have a live audio feed, and participants can type in questions in real time. A faster-than-dialup Internet connection is necessary. Complete information on how to access the sessions will be sent to registered attendees by email.

An Inside Report From the Haiti Tragedy From Only A Servant Ministries

I am writing you today to ask you to join my family and others in making a contribution to Only A Servant Ministries for Christian relief for the precious people of the earthquake-devastated nation of Haiti. Present reports on the dead range from 30,000 to 100,000.

Those of you who have followed the story of the life and death of Shelby Kennedy, a former member of the local church of which I am a part, and the young lady who is the inspiration behind the Shelby Kennedy Foundation’s National Bible Bee, may know of the tremendous work of Shelby’s mother and father—Ken and Debbie Kennedy of Only A Servant Ministries. For just under two decades the Kennedys have worked in Haiti, bringing physical helps and the Gospel of Christ to the Haitian people. They offer the following inside report from earlier this week on the great Haitian earthquake tragedy from their teammates on the ground in Haiti:

We are all OK and those who are close to us are also fine. There is a LOT of damage and will undoubtedly be a great many casualties. My assistant Desir arrived here a few minutes ago and said he saw Caribbean Market (the largest, fanciest store in the country) had been flattened. He passed it a few minutes after the main shock. It is ALWAYS packed at that time of the afternoon so will have many deaths and injuries - almost all will be in the elite classes and the UN people here in the country. We were near the sand mines below our place at the time of the main shock and it looked like the whole two mile length of the cliffs collapsed. There are many hundreds of people working there.

Lots of rumors but not much we can confirm at the moment. Cannot get through to anyone on the cell phones as they are jammed solid. No electricity anywhere except for people like us who have inverters and generators. Shock happened just before dark so things are proceeding in pitch black - solid cloud cover as well. Many aftershocks - they had been coming every ten to fifteen minutes but just a little bit ago we had three almost one after another. Ann is the fastest one among us at jumping and running for a door. Just had the biggest one yet - 4th in about 5 minutes. Most unsettling.

Pray for us, and in particular, pray for those who surround us and have much greater problems than we do.

David and Ann Farquharson

Ken followed up with this notice:

Dear Friends in Christ,

Thank you for your concern for our Haitian friends. Most communication is down. We have not been able to contact our Haitian administrator, Lussade Eugene, and we are concerned for the schools. Unfortunately, they are in the worst areas and the buildings are not much. Pastor Marc’s school is in Carrefour, within a mile of the earthquakes center. Pastor Peti Noel’s school is in a very poor section of Petionville. All reports from Petionville are not good. We have received only one e-mail from some friends that live up the mountain, close to our old home and sort of close to Lussade. (It is at the bottom of this letter.)

This afternoon we have found a way for Micah to go to Haiti on Jan. 23rd. He will be helping with medical needs in the Petionville and Carrefour areas. Please, if you would like to help support his trip, any money sent for his trip will go towards helping our friends and others with medical and food/water needs in Haiti.

Just like many of you, we feel very helpless at this time. Please pray for Lussade, Pastors Marc and Peti Noel, their families, and the school children and their families.

We will update you when we have any news. Thank you for your prayers.

Because of Christ, Ken and Debbi Kennedy

And here is the final report:

Praise the Lord!! Tonight we finally got through by phone to Lussade. He and his family are doing well. He says the government is telling everyone not to sleep in their homes, so they all sleep outside their homes. He has some street people staying with him and his family. He has contacted Pastor Marc by phone and he and all the children are fine. We consider this a miracle!! He has not been able to get Pastor Peti Noel by phone yet.

Lussade said that he is almost out of food. They have water. No grocery stores are open, so he’s not sure when he will be able to get more food.

Micah has tickets to go to Haiti on the 23rd of Jan. Though they have tickets they may change the dates when they discern whether this is the best timing to go. The orphanage where Micah often stays is still up and doing well, praise the Lord.

If you would like to help with funds for supplies, any gifts sent for Haiti will go to Haiti or to help Micah get there. Thank you so much for your interest and your prayers. We praise the Lord for this good news. Please continue to pray for Haiti, Pastor Peti Noel, Pastor Marc, Lussade, the school children and their families.

Press Release: The Mysterious Islands DVD Shows Sea Shepherd Pirates Whose Boat Was Sunk Last Week to Be Darwinian Extremists

The Whaling Controversy Resolved: Mysterious Islands DVD Shows Sea Shepherd Pirates to Be Darwinian Extremists

The flag of the Sea Sheperd ships

San Antonio, TX — January 15, 2010 — Last week’s clash between the Japanese whaling ship, the Shonan Maru and the Ady Gil, a vessel owned and manned by the eco-terrorist group Sea Shepherd, highlights an animal rights battle that was launched when Charles Darwin visited the Galápagos Islands in 1835 — a theme explored in detail on a featurette of The Mysterious Islands, a newly-released documentary that debunks the conclusions Darwin reached during his famous voyage of the Beagle. The featurette — entitled “The Galapagos Whaling Controversy: A Christian Perspective” — takes environmental groups such as Sea Shepherd, Greenpeace, and PETA head on, and shows how their anti-hunting and worshipful view of animals flows directly from Darwin’s theory of evolution.

“The Galápagos Islands were not only a once-great international whaling hub, but — thanks to Charles Darwin — this archipelago holds the distinction of being the birthplace of the modern animal rights movement,” noted Doug Phillips, Executive Producer of The Mysterious Islands.

“Darwin argued that man is not a unique creature supernaturally created by God in His image with a responsibility to exercise dominion over creation, but he is simply another animal,” Phillips stated. “Radical environmentalists embrace this as their starting point and thus view man of no greater significance than a fish, a frog, or a whale.

“The Galápagos Whaling Controversy: A Christian Perspective” takes specific aim at Sea Shepherd, an animal rights group founded by Paul Watson who previously helped start Greenpeace before being ousted from their board due to his extreme tactics.

Eco-Terrorist Paul Watson

“The liberal news media and Discovery Channel’s popular reality show, Whale Wars, has sought to portray Paul Watson and his fellow Sea Shepherd cronies as folk heroes as they have repeatedly engaged in acts of terror on the high seas,” Phillips continued. “Watson’s recent charge of piracy against the Shonan Maru is disingenuous doublespeak, as he has boasted of sinking numerous whaling vessels from Iceland to Antarctica over the years, visibly displaying images of the ships he has sunk on the side of his own renegade vessels. Watson has personally been convicted of sabotage many times over — he’s the real pirate in this whole affair.

The methods of the eco-terrorist group Sea Shepherd are well documented and include the use of limpet mines to scuttle whaling boats, hurling bottles of foul-smelling butyric acid on rival ships, and rifle fire, among other violent tactics.

“Watson speaks regularly of the ‘virus of humanity’ and has declared openly that ‘in this war between our species and the others . . . I side most passionately with them against us, a proud traitor to my species,’” observed Phillips.

Concluded Phillips: “Watson’s anti-human worldview flows from a radical brand of Darwinism that is at war with God. He and his Sea Shepherd associates reject the biblical teaching that man is God’s appointed steward over the creation. They advance their terrorist agenda with a twisted religious ferocity that shows that they worship the creature rather than the Creator.”

The Mysterious Islands film — which comes with “The Galápagos Whaling Controversy” bonus feature — was shot last year on the Galápagos Islands as the world celebrated the 200th anniversary of birth of Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his landmark book, On the Origins of Species. The Mysterious Islands recently enjoyed successful premieres in ten cities across the nation, from Tampa to Birmingham, with opening night audiences of more than 2,500 and 1,300 moviegoers respectively.

The film retraces Darwin’s steps on the Galápagos and shows how he erred in his observations concerning the amazing and unusual creatures that inhabit these islands. The film’s conclusion: that that the Galápagos Islands are a showcase for God’s creation, not a laboratory for evolution, as Darwin maintained.

The First Place Winner of the 2009 Bible Bee Discusses Vision Forum and Balancing the Sword

Our family is so grateful for Vision Forum and the quality products they provide. We were first introduced to Balancing the Sword and the Bible Bee through their catalog, and both have been a great blessing to our lives. Balancing the Sword is made up of two volumes which contain over 7,000 questions for every chapter of the Bible. I am not aware of a more effective tool I could have used to prepare myself for the Bible Knowledge portion of the Bible Bee. It was shocking to discover how much I had been missing before. After sitting down and reading a chapter, I could not believe how many times I would read the questions for the chapter and find I had no clue what the answer was, even though I had just finished reading it!

However, Balancing the Sword prepared me spiritually in many other areas besides the Bible Bee. Learning to appreciate the fascinating details of God’s Word, balanced with a focus on applying it to my daily life, is the key to a comprehensive, meaningful study of the Scriptures. Getting God’s Word into my heart. Not my mind. That is what the Bible Bee was all about. That is what made the hours of time and effort I put into it worth it. That is what is changing my life, and will transform the lives of everyone who allows it to do so.

Meet One of the Men Behind the Score to The Mysterious Islands

One of my favorite cues in The Mysterious Islands was called “Creatures of the Deep.” It was composed and performed by my close friend and great talent, Benjamin Botkin. I told Ben that I was looking for a vintage 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea feel.

Ben delivered! Here is a clip.

Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the work of Ben Botkin and visit Ben’s blog for more insights on his composition.

Birmingham News Highlights the Erwin Brothers and 'The Mysterious Islands'

“Christian critics of evolution film Charles Darwin documentary in Galapagos Islands”

By Greg Garrison; January 1, 2010 — The Birmingham News

The past year has been a year of celebration for fans of Charles Darwin, but critics of evolution have been busy, too. Darwin’s theory of evolution was explained in his book, “On the Origin of Species.” Because of the 150th anniversary of the book’s publication in 1859 and the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth in 1809, there were many commemorations of Darwin in 2009.

There has also been backlash by those opposed to Darwin’s theories. Birmingham filmmakers Jon and Andy Erwin showed their anti-evolution documentary, “The Mysterious Islands,” at the Alabama Theatre on Nov. 24, the 150th anniversary of the publication of “Origin of Species.”

The brothers filmed in the Galapagos Islands, reviewing Darwin’s conclusions and siding with a person who shared the Galapagos voyage with Darwin, Capt. Robert Fitzroy of the HMS Beagle, who disputed those conclusions.

The Erwins did their filming March 8-15 on a shoestring budget.

“I would compare it to ‘Jurassic Park,’ ” Jon Erwin said of the setting. “There’s no way to describe it. It’s unreal. I had the time of my life. The islands are volcanic, and there’s no indigenous human population, so the animals just aren’t afraid of you. They act like they’re domesticated. I was filming a crab, and a sea lion came up and started nudging my leg like a dog.”

Doug Phillips, founder of Vision Forum Ministries, came up with the idea of the documentary on Darwin shot in the Galapagos. “I wanted something significant, cinematically beautiful,” Phillips said. “They did a fantastic job.”
