After writing several novels of indifferent success, G.A. Henty in 1871 wrote an adventure story expressly for boys. Entitled Out on the Pampas, the story was set in South America and proved a commercial success, launching his career as a writer of books for boys. A unique feature of that first book was his use of his childrens names for the main characters.
